At Missing Piece, we utilize two main forms of formal assessment,
the Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills-Revised (ABLLS-R) and the Verbal-Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP).
These forms of assessment are particularly helpful in creating ABA-based programs.
We also use informal assessments, observations, professional and parent reports to guide our curriculum.
ABA-Based Programming
Applied Behavioral Analysis is the practice of breaking down larger, more complex tasks into smaller units that can be taught separately to allow a student to experience greater success.
Our ABA-based program is based upon the principles of Applied Behavioral Analysis and is designed for students who have not yet entered the school setting, or are in a special education setting for most of the school day.
Our ABA-based programs focus on pre-academic and emerging academic skills and give children repeated exposure to tasks to increase the likelihood of meeting goals.
A great emphasis is placed upon generalization of skills across materials and environments.
In addition to academic goals, we will also analyze problem behaviors and create behavior plans, as well as work on toileting with your child if necessary.
Data is taken on programs daily, and is recorded so that you are able to see your child’s progress.
Tutoring Program
Our tutoring program utilizes principles of Applied Behavioral Analysis, but allows for less structure than our ABA-Based program.
We leave room for our highly-trained tutors to create further learning opportunities for your child based upon homework and Grade-Level Content Expectations (GLCES).
With the one-on-one support of one of our tutors, you child will experience greater success in the classroom and gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of subject matter.
This program is best suited to a child who is in an inclusion program or in a general education classroom full-time.
In addition to academic goals, we emphasize social skills training, generalization, and we also analyze problem behaviors and work on toileting with your child if needed.
IEP Advocacy
IEP meetings can be confusing and frustrating for both parents and teachers.
Many parents feel that they are not being heard, while teachers feel pressure to meet “adequate yearly progress goals” for each student.
The result of this situation can leave both parties feeling unsatisfied.
This is why Missing Piece offers IEP advocacy services.
We will look over all goals and objectives presented in the IEP to be sure they are both objectively measurable and appropriate for your child.
We pride ourselves in working WITH teachers and school professionals rather than against them to ensure your child is granted the services he or she is entitled to; and he or she receives the academic plan that is best suited to his or her abilities.
Behavioral Interventions
Missing Piece Home Therapy Solutions is equipped to provide analyses and interventions for a wide variety of problem behaviors, including,
but not limited to: aggression, self-injury, throwing, elopement (running away), screaming, and self-stimulation.
Behavioral interventions are included in the hourly rate for our ABA-based program and tutoring clients.
Those clients wishing to obtain behavioral interventions as a consultation service will have two options for the type of analysis of the problem behaviors that best suit your family’s needs (Functional Assessment of Problem Behaviors or Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence (ABC) Data).
With both options, trained professionals will analyze data and create the intervention for your child’s behavior, and advise parents and educators on how to implement the plan.
Potty Training
Potty training services are included in the hourly rate for our ABA-Based program and tutoring clients.
For consultation only clients, we offer the following options.
Option A: Home Protocol/Parent Implementation: Following an initial home visit, parents will be asked to collect data on how often their child’s diaper is wet or soiled during a period of 7 days.
Based upon this data, and consultation with parents, a potty training schedule and protocol will be created.
The parents will implement this protocol following explanation and brief training by one of our tutors.
This option is best suited to a child who is of typical potty training age (2.5-5 years), in a setting where parents or care givers are able to devote considerable time being firm and consistent with the protocol. Follow-up consultations are available by phone or in person.
Option B: Potty Training Boot Camp: Following an initial home visit, parents will be asked to collect data on how often their child’s diaper is wet or soiled during a 7 day period.
Based upon this data, and consultation with parents, a potty training protocol and schedule will be created.
During boot camp, a tutor will spend 3 days in a row (6 hours per day) in your home implementing the protocol with your child and teaching you how to implement the protocol yourself.
This option is suited to children at any stage of potty training, it is also particularly helpful for children who may not have had success with potty training in the past, or who have exceeded the typical potty training age (6 years and up).
Following the boot camp, parents will be given instructions on how to continue the teaching process, and tutors will be available for follow-up consultations by phone or in person.
This service is also available to our tutoring/therapy clients at a discounted rate.
School and Therapy Clinic Visits
Many times, students with special needs are enrolled in multiple school and therapy programs.
It can be hard to keep things consistent.
It is our goal to work with your child’s school and therapy teams to provide the best educational experience possible.
We offer visits to schools as both a consultation service for non-clients and at a discounted rate to our ABA-based program or tutoring clients.
